Adolescent Bariatric Surgery

Obesity is not just an adult condition. Childhood obesity is now one of the most serious public health concerns in the U.S.

Children and teens who are obese are more likely to remain obese as adults. They are also at higher risk for obesity-related health problems, such as type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood pressure and fatty liver disease. Obesity can also impact mental health, increasing the risk for depression and anxiety.

About the Banner Health Adolescent Bariatric Surgery Program

The Banner Health Adolescent Bariatric Surgery team provides compassionate, family-centered care for children and teens who are overweight or obese and want to achieve a healthier lifestyle.

Before weight loss surgery can be considered, teens must complete at least six months in a comprehensive weight loss program with a team of specialists. Our dietitians, behavioral health providers and medical team help teens build healthy lifestyle habits while addressing any obesity-related health concerns.

We tailor treatment to your child’s needs. In addition to encouraging healthy habits, we may recommend weight-loss medications or specialized diets. For some patients, weight loss surgery may be an option.

Does my child qualify for bariatric surgery?

You and your teen will meet with our bariatric team to determine if surgery is appropriate. During the first visit, we’ll do a complete medical review, including lab work and a body mass index (BMI) measurement.

If your child has other health conditions, additional testing and visits with specialists - such as cardiology, pulmonology or sleep medicine - may be required.

Types of bariatric surgery we perform

The decision on which procedure is best for your child is made together by your family and our bariatric team.

The most common weight loss surgeries for teens and adults today are performed laparoscopically or robotically, using a minimally invasive approach. This often means smaller incisions, less pain, and a faster recovery.

Benefits of adolescent bariatric surgery

Bariatric surgery can improve or reverse obesity-related health conditions, such as:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Fatty liver disease
  • Sleep apnea

Teens often experience improved self-esteem, social engagement, and overall quality of life after surgery. Research shows that having bariatric surgery earlier in life can be more effective than delaying it until adulthood.

Life after adolescent bariatric surgery

Bariatric surgery is a lifelong commitment to nutrition and healthy living.

In the weeks after surgery, your teen will gradually reintroduce foods, beginning with clear liquids, then full liquids, soft foods, and finally, a regular diet. To avoid dumping syndrome, they will need to avoid certain foods, especially simple sugars like honey or white sugar.

Our health care team will guide you in creating a safe, balanced eating plan.

If excess skin or tissue affects your teen’s comfort or confidence after surgery, our skilled plastic surgeons can help. These procedures may not be covered by insurance.
