Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix is a nationally recognized hospital that has provided care to the Arizona community since 1911. The world-class academic medical center is focused on highly coordinated clinical care, expanded research activities and a long history in nurturing future generations of highly trained medical professionals.
The hospital was the first to establish an administrative resident program. The oldest accredited GME program was OB/GYN in 1951. Local records indicate Internal Medicine was the next accredited program in 1969, with significant expansion of programs in the 1970s to include Arizona’s first family medicine program, general surgery, psychiatry and more.
In 2015, Banner Health merged with the University of Arizona Health Network in Tucson, Ariz. The resulting Academic Affiliation Agreement created Banner – University Medicine, an academic division where Banner leads clinical delivery and oversight for residency and fellowship programs and the University of Arizona College of Medicine became the administrative sponsor.
Banner continues to make significant investment into the GME program to better meet the growing health care needs of Arizona’s communities. By 2023, Banner is responsible for more than 1,000 residency and fellowship positions throughout the state with expansions in areas of critical need.
