Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP)

Banner Behavioral Health offers intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) to provide clinical, evidence-based support for adults and adolescents struggling with substance abuse or mental health issues. These programs allow participants to maintain their daily routines while receiving the care they need. Learn more about our therapy programs and call (602) 254-4357 to schedule an intake assessment for you or a family member.

Program structure

Our IOPs typically run for 8 weeks, with sessions held three times a week for three hours each. Session days and times may vary depending on the location. Each group consists of around 10 patients, fostering a supportive and interactive environment.

Adult intensive outpatient program (IOP) services

Adult Mental Health & Co-occurring

This program is designed for adults of all ages experiencing mental health challenges and co-occurring substance use issues. It utilizes an eclectic blend of therapeutic interventions to offer support and address treatment-related concerns. The group focuses on teaching practical skills aimed at reducing stressors and enhancing emotional regulation and interpersonal relations.

Adolescent intensive outpatient program (IOP) services

Our adolescent IOPs serve teenagers aged 13 to 17 who are facing challenges such as substance abuse or mental health issues like depression and anxiety. Learn how adolescent IOP programs can benefit your child.

Adolescent Mental Health and Co-occurring (ages 13-17)

This program is designed for adolescents experiencing mental health challenges and co-occurring substance use issues. It utilizes a diverse range of therapeutic interventions to support participants in developing effective coping and regulation strategies. The group setting fosters interpersonal connection and peer support while emphasizing the development of emotional regulation and interpersonal effectiveness skills. To help reinforce these skills, family therapy is provided on a weekly basis helping parents and caregivers to understand their teen

Therapy approaches

Our group therapy is led by a licensed clinician and includes individuals with similar experiences or diagnoses. This therapy helps participants realize they are not alone, provides mutual support and teaches healthier ways to relate to others. It also encourages speaking up, self-advocacy and making personal needs known within a supportive community.

Family involvement

We believe in the importance of family support during the recovery process. Family sessions are held once a week, allowing loved ones to participate and support the patient's journey. The availability and scheduling of these sessions may vary by location and group.

Personalized treatment plans

Each patient receives an individualized treatment plan developed in collaboration with their therapist. These plans outline specific treatment goals, are reviewed midway through the program to assess progress, and are discussed upon completion to evaluate outcomes and plan for future support.

Medication management

While medication management is not provided within our IOPs, we encourage coordination of care with established health care providers. We also offer support in connecting patients with external providers if needed.

Program goals

  • Provide a safe and supportive environment for individuals to address mental health and substance abuse challenges.
  • Equip patients with effective tools and coping mechanisms to manage ongoing life stressors and restore balance.
  • Foster connections and support networks among individuals facing similar issues to promote collective healing and understanding.

Measuring success

Success in our IOPs is measured through:

  • Completion of individualized treatment goals.
  • Improved scores on assessment tools such as the PHQ-9 and GAD-7.
  • Transitioning patients to lower levels of care as appropriate.

Aftercare planning

Upon completing the program, patients receive a comprehensive aftercare plan that may include:

  • Scheduled appointments for ongoing individual, family or couples therapy.
  • Referrals to psychiatry services and peer-led support groups.
  • Identification of natural support systems to continue progress outside of the program.

Admission criteria

Admission is assessed during a free intake evaluation. Generally, individuals experiencing increased mental health symptoms or substance abuse that impacts daily functioning may be eligible for our IOPs.

We strive to make our programs accessible by accepting most major insurance plans, including Medicaid and Medicare. Financial assistance options are available through payment plans coordinated with the Banner billing department or CURAE, a medical credit card solution.
