Pancreatic Cancer Treatment

At Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center, we understand that a pancreatic cancer diagnosis can feel overwhelming. You’re not alone.

Your care plan is designed around your needs and backed by leading cancer experts. From surgery and chemotherapy to emotional and nutritional support, our team offers care tailored to your type and stage of cancer and your goals.

How to treat pancreatic cancer

Your pancreatic cancer treatment options are based on many factors, including:

  • The type and stage of cancer
  • Where exactly it’s located
  • Your overall health
  • Your goals

Our team of pancreatic cancer specialists, including surgical, medical and radiation oncologists, works together to create a personalized plan that may include:

  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy
  • Targeted therapy or immunotherapy
  • Palliative and supportive care

Treatment may also include clinical trials that offer promising new options.

Surgery for pancreatic cancer

Surgery often gives you the best chance for a cure if the cancer hasn’t spread too far. Your surgeon will figure out which procedure is right for you, depending on where the cancer is located:

  • Whipple procedure (pancreaticoduodenectomy): This is the most common surgery for pancreatic cancer. It’s used when the tumor is in the head of the pancreas.
  • Distal pancreatectomy: This surgery removes the body and tail of the pancreas, and most often the spleen due to shared blood supply.
  • Total pancreatectomy: This surgery removes the entire pancreas and sometimes surrounding organs. Without your pancreas, you will need to adjust your diet and take medication.

Sometimes, surgeons can use minimally invasive or robotic-assisted techniques for pancreatic cancer surgeries. These can help you recover faster with less pain.

Chemotherapy for pancreatic cancer

Chemotherapy uses powerful medications to kill cancer cells. It may be used:

  • Before surgery (neoadjuvant) to shrink the tumor
  • After surgery (adjuvant) to reduce the risk of the cancer coming back
  • As the main treatment if surgery isn’t an option

Common chemo drugs for pancreatic cancer include:

  • FOLFIRINOX, a combination treatment that includes folinic acid, fluorouracil, irinotecan and oxaliplatin
  • Gemcitabine
  • Nab-paclitaxel (in combination with Gemcitabine)

Side effects vary, but our team helps manage them so you stay as strong as you can during treatment.

Radiation therapy for pancreatic cancer

Radiation therapy uses high-energy rays to destroy cancer cells. It may be used:

  • Alongside chemotherapy (chemoradiation)
  • To shrink tumors before surgery
  • To relieve pain or blockages caused by advanced cancer

We use external beam radiation and advanced techniques that target the tumor while protecting nearby healthy tissue.

Targeted therapy and immunotherapy

You may benefit from targeted treatments or immunotherapy, especially if genetic testing shows that you have certain mutations.

  • Targeted therapy for pancreatic cancer attacks cancer cells that have specific genetic changes.
  • Immunotherapy for pancreatic cancer boosts your body’s natural defenses to help you fight cancer.
  • Molecular profiling can help us match you with personalized treatments, new therapies or clinical trials.

These options are most often used for people who have inherited mutations or advanced cancer.

Nutrition and wellness during treatment

Pancreatic cancer and its treatments can make it harder to eat, digest food or maintain a healthy weight. Nutrition for pancreatic cancer patients is important.

Our oncology dietitians help you:

  • Manage side effects like nausea or poor appetite
  • Plan meals that meet your needs
  • Stay hydrated and nourished
  • Prevent malnutrition while you’re being treated

A healthy approach to nutrition can improve your energy and help your body recover.

Emotional and social support services

A cancer diagnosis affects more than just your physical health. We offer pancreatic cancer support services for the emotional and mental challenges you may face.

You can access emotional support for cancer patients such as:

  • Counseling and behavioral health services
  • Support groups and survivorship programs
  • Social workers who help with transportation, finances and more
  • Caregiver support and respite resources
  • Help coping with stress, anxiety and grief

Palliative care and symptom management

Palliative care for pancreatic cancer focuses on improving your quality of life at any cancer stage. It’s not just for end-of-life care. It’s an important part of your treatment.

Our team can help you manage symptoms of cancer such as:

  • Pain, since pain in the stomach and back can be challenging when you have pancreatic cancer
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea and digestion issues
  • Loss of appetite or weight loss
  • Anxiety and emotional stress

Supportive therapies can help you feel better and stay independent throughout your treatment.

Life and follow-up after pancreatic cancer treatment

Even after treatment ends, we’re here for you.

  • We provide regular follow-up visits to monitor your health and watch for signs that cancer might be coming back.
  • Our survivorship care team helps you adjust to physical and emotional changes and plan for your care going forward.
  • You’ll receive a personalized care plan for nutrition and activity to help you rebuild your strength.
  • We’ll connect you with rehab, behavioral health and other recovery resources that can help you adjust to life after treatment.

When treatment is no longer working

There may come a time when treatments are no longer slowing the cancer or improving your quality of life. This is called terminal pancreatic cancer. If this happens, your care team will talk with you about shifting focus from trying to cure the disease to keeping you comfortable and supporting your well-being.

You’ll never be left to figure out end-of-life care for pancreatic cancer by yourself. With open conversations about your goals and next steps, we’ll help you understand your options and support you in making the decisions that feel right for you.

Hospice care for pancreatic cancer

Hospice care is a type of support for people with advanced cancer who are nearing the end of life. It doesn’t mean giving up. It means focusing on comfort, dignity and spending time with the people you love.

You may want to consider hospice when treatments stop working or the side effects are outweighing the benefits.

Hospice care for pancreatic cancer may include:

  • Pain and symptom control
  • Emotional, social and spiritual support
  • Help for family members and caregivers
  • Care at home, in a hospice center or in another setting

If hospice becomes the right option, we’ll help you make a smooth, respectful transition with full support from our team.
