Kidney Problem Symptoms

Your kidneys filter waste, balance fluids, and help keep your body healthy. But when they aren’t working well, the warning signs can be easy to miss. Many kidney-related problems cause non-specific symptoms - meaning they could be mistaken for other health issues. That’s why it’s important to notice changes in how you feel and see a doctor if something doesn’t seem right.

Early signs and symptoms of kidney problems

If you experience one or more of the following symptoms, schedule an appointment with your health care provider. Early testing can help protect your kidney function and prevent further damage.

Changes in urination

Your urine can tell you a lot about your kidney health. Watch for:

  • Urinating more often or at night (nocturia) – Needing to get up frequently to urinate, especially overnight.
  • Urinating less often or in smaller amounts – Dark-colored urine or a noticeable drop in how much you pass.
  • Foamy, bubbly or frothy urine – Could indicate excess protein.
  • Urine with blood – Pink, red, or cola-colored urine may mean bleeding in the urinary tract.
  • Pain or pressure while urinating – Can signal an infection or blockage.

Swelling from kidney issues (edema)

When your kidneys can’t remove extra fluid, it can collect in your body, causing swelling in:

  • Legs, ankles or feet
  • Hands or fingers
  • Face, especially around the eyes

Fatigue and low energy from kidney disease

Kidney problems can cause toxins to build up in the blood. This can make you:

  • Feel tired or weak, even after resting
  • Have trouble concentrating (“brain fog”)
  • Feel dizzy or lightheaded

Changes in taste or appetite

Waste buildup can affect how food tastes and make you less interested in eating. You might notice:

  • A metallic or unusual taste in your mouth
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea or vomiting

Breathing issues and bad breath

Kidney-related problems can cause:

  • Shortness of breath due to fluid buildup or anemia
  • Breath that smells like ammonia or urine

Skin changes and itching

When waste products remain in your blood, they can make your skin:

  • Dry and itchy
  • Feel irritated in specific areas or all over

When to seek immediate medical attention

Call 911 or go to the emergency room if you experience:

  • Severe shortness of breath or chest pain
  • Sudden, extreme swelling of the face, arms, or legs
  • Blood in your urine with clots or severe pain
  • Confusion or extreme fatigue

Why early detection of kidney disease matters

Kidney disease can progress quietly for years. Detecting it early allows for treatment that can slow or stop further damage. Your doctor can order simple blood and urine tests to check how well your kidneys are working.
