High-Risk Pregnancy Conditions

Some pregnancies need extra care because certain conditions may increase health risks for the parent or baby. These risks may exist before pregnancy or develop during pregnancy. Regular prenatal visits are an important way to watch for any changes.

What can increase the risk of a high-risk pregnancy

Risk factors may include:

  • Autoimmune disorders such as lupus or myasthenia gravis
  • Diabetes
  • Infectious diseases such as hepatitis, HIV/AIDS or sexually transmitted infections
  • Genetic conditions involving the parent or baby such as hemophilia, cystic fibrosis or Down syndrome
  • Pregnancy over age 35
  • Pregnancy during the teen years

If any of these apply to you, talk with your doctor about prenatal testing and care options.

How high-risk pregnancy conditions are diagnosed and treated

Testing can help your care team understand what you need to have a healthy pregnancy. The tests your doctor recommends will depend on your unique risk factors.

Common tests may include:

  • Ultrasound to check growth and development
  • Lab tests to monitor health concerns such as diabetes or infection
  • Amniocentesis to test amniotic fluid for genetic conditions
  • Genetic testing to better understand inherited risks

Treatment options depend on the condition. Your doctor will explain the safest plan for you and your baby and answer any questions you may have.

Ways to support a healthy pregnancy

You may not be able to prevent all high-risk conditions, but you can take steps to protect your health:

  • Keep all prenatal appointments
  • Eat a balanced, nutritious diet
  • Stay active as recommended by your doctor
