Brain Biopsy

A brain biopsy is a procedure where a neurosurgeon removes a small sample of brain tissue for testing. This helps determine if a tumor or lesion is cancerous and what type it may be. The results guide the best treatment plan for you or your loved one.

Who performs a brain biopsy

A board-certified neurosurgeon at Banner Health performs the biopsy using advanced tools designed to protect healthy brain tissue.

Why a brain biopsy is recommended

A biopsy may be recommended when:

  • Imaging shows a tumor or lesion that is difficult to diagnose
  • More information is needed before planning treatment
  • Removing the entire tumor is not possible at the time of diagnosis

Your neurosurgeon will explain why this is the right next step in your care.

Before your procedure

Your care team will use detailed imaging like an MRI or CT scan to locate the exact area to biopsy. Based on what they see your neurosurgeon will recommend one of two techniques:

  • Open biopsy: A small opening is made in the skull to remove tissue or the entire tumor when safe
  • Stereotactic needle biopsy: A tiny needle is guided precisely to the area to obtain a sample through a very small incision

How to prepare

  • Ask if you should avoid food, drink or certain medications
  • Arrange a ride home and someone to stay with you afterward
  • Bring your medical list and any questions for your surgeon

Will I be awake?

Most brain biopsies are performed under general anesthesia so you are fully asleep. In rare cases your care team may recommend keeping you awake to help monitor important brain functions.

During the procedure

Your neurosurgeon will:

  1. Create a small opening where the tissue will be removed
  2. Carefully take a sample from the targeted area
  3. Send the sample to a pathologist for testing

A stereotactic biopsy allows your surgeon to reach deep or sensitive areas with minimal disruption to nearby tissue.

After your biopsy

Most people stay in the hospital for a short time so their care team can monitor for side effects like:

  • Headache
  • Swelling
  • Seizure
  • Bleeding

When to call your doctor

If you experience new or worsening symptoms after you go home including:

  • Severe headache
  • Trouble speaking
  • Weakness
  • Confusion
  • Seizure

Call your care team right away or go to the nearest emergency department.

Getting your results

A pathologist studies the tissue sample to confirm a diagnosis. Results are usually available within a few days. Your neurosurgeon will review what they mean and discuss recommended next steps which may include surgery, medication, radiation therapy or close monitoring.
