What to Expect During Outpatient Surgery

It’s normal to feel uneasy before surgery. Knowing what to expect can help you feel more confident and less stressed. Whether this is your first surgery or one of many, the care team at Banner Health is here to guide you every step of the way.

Our outpatient surgery centers provide safe, efficient procedures in a calm, comfortable environment - helping you get the care you need and return home the same day.

What is outpatient surgery?

Outpatient surgery - sometimes called same-day surgery or ambulatory surgery - allows you to have a procedure and go home within a few hours. These surgeries are common for procedures such as joint repair, hernia repair, endoscopy, cataract surgery and more.

At Banner Health, outpatient procedures are performed by experienced surgeons and anesthesiologists using advanced technology and strict safety standards. You’ll receive high-quality care designed for a smooth recovery and a quicker return to your daily activities.

How to prepare for outpatient surgery

Your doctor will give you specific instructions before your procedure, but here are some general dos and don’ts to help you get ready:

Do:

  • Call your doctor if you feel sick before your surgery (such as having a fever, cold or flu symptoms).
  • Discuss all medications you take, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements. Ask your doctor when to take them before surgery.
  • Follow fasting instructions exactly as directed (typically no food or drink after midnight).
  • Bring a photo ID and your insurance card on the day of surgery.
  • Arrange a ride home. You’ll need someone to drive you after your procedure.

Don’t:

  • Eat or drink anything after midnight unless your doctor says otherwise.
  • Chew gum or suck on candy, mints or throat lozenges the day of surgery.
  • Smoke or vape after midnight before your surgery.

Tip: Pack lightly - bring your ID, insurance card and any necessary paperwork. Leave valuables and jewelry at home.

What to expect at an outpatient facility

Outpatient facilities are designed with your comfort and convenience in mind. Compared to hospitals, they’re typically quieter and more relaxed. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Streamlined check-in and shorter wait times.
  • Personalized care from staff who focus on same-day procedures.
  • Lower out-of-pocket costs for many patients compared to inpatient surgery.
  • Safe, high-quality care using the same standards and technology found in Banner hospitals.

Before your procedure, your care team will review your health information, confirm your surgery details and answer any last-minute questions.

What to expect after surgery

After surgery, you’ll spend time in a recovery area where nurses and anesthesiology staff will monitor your vital signs, comfort, and pain level. Recovery times vary - from about an hour to a few hours - depending on the type of procedure and anesthesia used.

You’ll be discharged once you are:

  • Fully awake and alert
  • Breathing normally
  • Able to drink fluids without nausea
  • Stable enough to walk with minimal assistance

Once you’re home, follow your discharge instructions carefully. Call your doctor if you experience:

  • A fever of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher
  • Excessive bleeding or swelling at the surgery site
  • Severe or worsening pain
  • Difficulty breathing or dizziness
