Pediatric Speech and Language Development

Speech and language skills play a big role in your child’s learning, confidence and social development. At Banner Children’s, our speech-language specialists help children and teens strengthen both verbal and nonverbal communication. In addition to speech and language milestones, therapy may also address related skills like feeding and swallowing.

Types of speech disorders in children

Speech disorders can range from mild to more complex. Some common types include:

  • Stuttering – interruptions in the flow of speech
  • Dysarthria – weak muscles in the face, lips or tongue that affect speaking
  • Childhood apraxia of speech – difficulty coordinating the movements needed to speak
  • Voice disorders – problems with pitch, volume or quality of the voice

Early signs of speech or language issues

The earlier a speech or language delay is identified, the sooner your child can begin treatment.

Warning signs to watch for include:

  • Limited babbling or talking for their age
  • Loss of words they once used
  • Ongoing or increasing speech errors
  • Delayed motor development
  • Feeding or swallowing difficulties

If you notice these signs, talk with your child’s pediatrician about next steps.

When to see a speech-language pathologist

Speech-language pathologists (sometimes called speech therapists) provide tools and strategies for both you and your child. If your pediatrician identifies a concern, they may recommend an evaluation with a specialist to better understand your child’s needs.

Treatment options for speech and language disorders

Treatment plans are tailored to each child. Options may include:

  • Speech therapythe most common treatment, helping children with articulation, language, voice and fluency (stuttering)
  • Hearing devices – if hearing loss is part of the problem
  • Medication or other supports – in certain medical conditions

Therapists also work with children on listening, reading, writing and overall communication skills to help them succeed at home, in school and with friends.
