Pediatric Cardiology Testing and Diagnosis

Working alongside your child’s pediatrician, Banner Children’s pediatric cardiologists provide comprehensive heart care - from testing and diagnosis to treatment and recovery. Our team of kid-connected specialists is often able to complete an evaluation and make a diagnosis the same day. We're here to answer your questions and help you make informed decisions about your child’s care.

Pediatric heart imaging tests

Heart imaging plays an important role in diagnosing heart conditions and planning the best treatment. At Banner Children’s, we use advanced imaging technology - including echocardiography, cardiac CT and MRI scans and 3D heart models—to understand your child’s heart in detail.

Echocardiography (heart ultrasound)

Echocardiography is a painless test that uses sound waves to create detailed pictures of the heart. It helps show how your child’s heart is structured and how well it pumps blood. Our caring staff will support your child throughout the test.

The Banner Children’s echocardiography lab uses state-of-the-art ultrasound technology to evaluate a wide range of heart conditions in children.

Cardiac CT scan

A cardiac CT scan is a noninvasive test that uses X-rays to get highly detailed images of the heart and blood vessels. It provides more information than a standard echocardiogram and is especially useful when evaluating complex heart defects or planning for catheter procedures or surgery.

CThese scans are performed with help from our pediatric cardiac anesthesia team to keep your child safe and comfortable.

Cardiac MRI

A cardiac MRI uses powerful magnets, not radiation, to take clear pictures of your child’s heart. It shows both heart structure and function and helps your doctor understand how well the heart is working.

Like CT scans, MRIs are done with support from pediatric anesthesia to ensure comfort. The scanner is noisy, but the test is painless.

3D heart models

Our cardiologists may use 3D-printed heart models made from your child’s CT or MRI scan to better understand complex heart conditions. These models help our congenital heart team plan treatment and can help your family visualize what’s happening inside your child’s heart.

Diagnostic cardiac catheterization

Cardiac catheterization allows doctors to measure pressures and blood flow inside the heart. This test is especially useful when ultrasound results are unclear or when we need to see how your child responds to certain medications or confirm they’re ready for surgery.

This procedure is performed in the hospital, with support from pediatric anesthesia.

Electrophysiology study (EP study)

If your child has an irregular heartbeat, an electrophysiology study can help find the cause and guide treatment. During this hospital-based procedure, your pediatric cardiologist may be able to treat the irregular heartbeat at the same time using a method called ablation.

These procedures are done with the help of our pediatric cardiac anesthesia team to ensure your child is comfortable.
