Banner Health offers the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT), a proven, evidence-based program that helps people with Parkinson’s disease and other neurological disorders improve the voice and mobility needed for daily living. Our LSVT-certified clinicians tailor each treatment plan to a patient’s specific needs, following LSVT protocols to achieve the best possible outcomes.
LSVT is an evidence-based therapy created in the 1980s by Dr. Lorraine Ramig. It was first introduced as LSVT LOUD, focusing on speech therapy to help patients speak with a louder, clearer voice. In the early 2000s, LSVT BIG was added to address physical and occupational therapy needs, using movement exercises to improve mobility.
Only LSVT-certified health care providers - such as Banner Health’s speech, physical and occupational therapists - can deliver these programs.
Both LSVT LOUD and LSVT BIG address the common communication and movement challenges of Parkinson’s disease and similar neurological conditions. Starting therapy in the early stages often leads to the best results, helping patients maintain strong voices and steady movement.
People with Parkinson’s or other neurological disorders often speak and move more quietly or with smaller motions than normal. LSVT retrains the body to recognize and use normal volume and movement. Although exercises may feel “too loud” or “too big” at first, patients learn to view these levels as normal and carry them into everyday life.
Therapists customize LSVT for each patient’s disease stage and severity. Patients may receive LSVT LOUD, LSVT BIG or both, depending on their needs.
During each session, your therapist guides you through exercises - “think loud” to “speak loud” and/or “think big” to “move big” - and uses video recordings to track your progress. Over time, these intensive sessions and daily home practice help patients regain normal voice and movement patterns.
