Recovery and Discharge

After your procedure, the recovery and discharge process is your path back to health. Banner Health’s surgical teams guide you through every step - from the post-anesthesia unit to your return home and continued healing.

What happens right after surgery

Once your surgery is complete, you’ll be moved to the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU). During this time, surgical nurses monitor your:

  • Breathing
  • Heart rate
  • Blood pressure
  • Temperature

The time you spend in the PACU depends on the type of anesthesia and procedure you had. While there, your care team will:

  • Encourage breathing exercises and coughing (to help clear lungs)
  • Check your surgical site and manage pain
  • Keep your loved ones informed (with your permission)

If you stay overnight, your PACU nurse will let your family know when you’re ready to move to your recovery room. If you're going home, they’ll let them know when you’re ready for discharge.

Discharge: going home safely

To leave the hospital, you’ll need:

  • A responsible adult to drive you home
  • Clear understanding of your post-surgery instructions

Your nurse will review (and you should feel comfortable asking questions about):

  • When and how to schedule follow-up appointments
  • How to care for your incision, bandages or drains
  • Medication instructions (what to take, when, and how)
  • Activity levels and when to return to normal daily routines
  • Dietary and fluid recommendations

After you get home, a nurse from Banner Health will check in with a phone call to see how you're doing and address any concerns.

You should contact your surgeon or hospital immediately if you experience:

  • Persistent nausea or vomiting
  • Fever and chills
  • Breathing trouble
  • Swelling, bleeding or worsening pain
