Well-Woman Care and Exams

Preventive care for every stage of life

Your health needs change over time, and regular preventive care can help you stay well through each phase. Banner Health encourages all women to schedule an annual well-woman visit. These appointments are an important way to check reproductive health, review any concerns and catch potential issues early.

If something needs further attention, our care team will help coordinate the right follow-up testing and treatment so you feel supported every step of the way.

What is well-woman care?

A well-woman exam focuses on your complete health. It is your time to talk with your provider about:

  • Menstrual changes
  • Sexual and reproductive health
  • Birth control options
  • Pregnancy planning
  • Breast health
  • Menopause and hormonal changes
  • Any questions about your body or symptoms

This visit is about preventive care and open conversation. You and your doctor will decide together what you want to cover.

What to expect during a well-woman visit

Your appointment may include:

  • A conversation about your health history and any changes since your last visit
  • A physical exam
  • Screening tests based on your age and health needs

If you have concerns about pain, periods, mood changes, fertility, sleep or anything else affecting your day-to-day life, this is a safe time to talk about them.

Every woman’s care plan is personalized. You can also request a female provider if that helps you feel more comfortable.

Well-woman exams, screenings and testing

Preventive screenings help detect problems early when they are easier to treat. Based on your age, risk factors and medical history, your doctor may recommend:

  • Blood and urine tests to check overall health
  • Pap test to screen for cervical cancer
  • HPV testing, often done with a Pap test
  • Pelvic exam
  • Breast exam
  • Screening mammogram for breast cancer
  • Ultrasound if needed to check pelvic organs or breast tissue
  • Bone density screening (DXA) for osteoporosis risk (usually after menopause)
  • STI testing based on risk or request

If needed, your doctor may also order specialized breast tests such as:

  • Breast biopsy
  • Fine-needle aspiration
  • Ductogram for nipple discharge
  • Lymph node evaluation
  • Breast cyst aspiration

Your provider will explain why each test is recommended and will review all results with you.

Questions your doctor may ask

Your provider may ask about topics such as:

  • When your last period started
  • How regular your periods are
  • Whether you are sexually active
  • If you are using birth control
  • If you plan to become pregnant
  • If you would like STI testing

These questions help guide your care. You are encouraged to ask your own questions too. Bringing a list can help you remember what you want to discuss.

Personalized care at every age

Your care needs will shift over time. For example:

  • Teens and young adults may focus on menstrual concerns and STI prevention
  • Women in their 20s–30s may discuss fertility, contraception and pregnancy planning
  • Women 40+ may review mammogram timing and perimenopause changes
  • Women after menopause may receive guidance on bone health and long-term screening needs

No matter your age, your Banner Health provider is here to support your wellness and answer your questions.
