We now offer Pulsed Electric Field (PEF) therapy

Banner – University Medical Center Tucson is proud to be the first hospital in Arizona to offer Pulsed Electric Field (PEF) therapy. This innovative cancer treatment uses short bursts of electric energy to break down cancer cells - without surgery or heat. It’s a safe, minimally invasive option now available for patients who may not be candidates for traditional treatments.

How does it work? During PEF therapy, doctors use a small device to deliver electrical pulses directly to the tumor. These pulses create tiny openings in the cancer cells, which causes them to break apart and die—while leaving surrounding healthy tissue mostly untouched.

The benefits include: 

• No incisions: PEF therapy is often delivered through a thin tube (endoscope), so there’s no need for open surgery.
• Preserves healthy tissue: Unlike heat- or radiation-based treatments, PEF doesn’t damage nearby organs or blood vessels.
• Treats hard-to-reach tumors: Ideal for tumors that are too risky to remove with surgery.
• May support your immune system: Early studies suggest PEF may help your body recognize and attack cancer cells.
