Allergy & Immunology Diagnostic Testing

What are my allergy treatment options?

At Banner Health, our allergy specialists take time to understand your symptoms and how they affect your daily life. We begin with a detailed health history and a physical exam to assess your condition.

To help confirm your diagnosis and create a personalized treatment plan, your allergist may recommend one or more of the following tests:

  • Bronchodilator reversibility testing – This test checks your lung function before and after you use a bronchodilator, a medication that relaxes the muscles in your airways. It helps determine how well your lungs are working and whether your symptoms may be related to asthma.
  • Delayed skin patch testing – This test places small amounts of possible allergens on your skin using patches. You’ll wear them for 48 to 96 hours to see if a delayed allergic reaction occurs. It’s often used to diagnose skin allergies like contact dermatitis.
  • Food and medication challenges – Under close medical supervision, you’ll be given small amounts of a food or medication that may be causing your symptoms. This helps confirm or rule out specific allergies in a safe, controlled environment.
  • Hypersensitivity skin testing – Your skin is exposed to small amounts of common allergens (such as pollen, pet dander or mold) through tiny pricks or scratches. We monitor for reactions like redness or swelling to identify what you’re allergic to.
  • In-office spirometry – This quick breathing test measures how much air you can inhale and exhale. It helps evaluate conditions like asthma that may be linked to your allergy symptoms.
  • Medication testing – If your symptoms may be related to a drug allergy, your allergist may recommend a skin or blood test to check how your body reacts to certain medications.
