Life After Weight Loss Surgery

Your relationship with Banner Health doesn’t end after surgery. Weight loss surgery (also called bariatric surgery) is just one part of your journey. We’re here to support your long-term health and help you maintain your weight loss for years to come.

Your recovery and post-op care plan will depend on the type of surgery you had. Before your procedure, your bariatric surgeon will explain what to expect and help you plan for work and home life during recovery. You’ll also get guidance on nutrition, exercise and lifestyle changes to help you succeed.

Here’s what to expect after surgery - and how Banner Health supports you at every step.

  • Mild bruising or swelling
  • Tiredness or trouble sleeping

  • Pain near the incision site Gas or bloating
  • Loose stools
  • Emotional ups and downs

Every person heals at a different pace. If you have any concerns, your Banner Health bariatric care team is here to help.

Some pain is expected, especially in the early recovery period. Your care team will give you clear instructions for managing pain at home. If pain keeps you from moving or getting up, let your provider know.

Follow your prescribed pain medications as directed to stay comfortable and mobile.

Weight loss surgery diet and nutrition guide

What you eat after surgery plays a big role in healing and long-term weight loss. You’ll have regular check-ins with a registered dietitian to monitor your progress and help you stay on track.

You’ll follow a staged meal plan that helps your stomach heal:

  1. Clear liquids
  2. Thicker protein-rich liquids
  3. Soft foods
  4. High-protein, low-carb solid foods

Once you’re fully recovered, you’ll follow a personalized eating plan focused on small portions and nutrient-rich foods.

Stay hydrated by drinking 1.5 to 2 liters of water daily - unless your care team gives other guidance.

Safe ways to exercise after weight loss surgery

Physical activity is a key part of your recovery and long-term success.

  • Start walking short distances as soon as you return home
  • Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activity for the first 6 weeks
  • Begin a light exercise routine about 4 weeks after surgery
  • Work toward 45 to 60 minutes of movement several days a week

Your Banner Health team will help you build an exercise plan that fits your abilities and lifestyle.
