Developmental Delays and Autism

If your child or loved one has a developmental delay or autism spectrum disorder, you don’t have to navigate it alone. At Banner Health, we offer compassionate, comprehensive care to help individuals build skills, confidence, and independence at every stage of life.

Our specialists focus on early identification, evidence-based therapies and long-term support so children and adults can reach their fullest potential.

What are developmental delays and autism?

Developmental delays happen when a child doesn’t reach expected milestones in areas such as speech, motor skills, learning or social interaction. Sometimes these differences are temporary, but others may point to an ongoing developmental condition.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person communicates, interacts and processes information. Autism exists on a spectrum, meaning each individual has unique strengths, challenges and support needs.

Both developmental delays and autism can affect daily life, but early support can make a lasting difference in progress and quality of life.

Signs of developmental delays or autism

Every child grows at their own pace, but certain signs may suggest a developmental concern. Talk with your pediatrician if you notice:

  • Limited eye contact or response to name
  • Trouble communicating or delayed speech
  • Difficulty playing or interacting with others
  • Unusual sensitivity to lights, sounds, textures or smells
  • Repetitive movements or behaviors
  • Challenges with balance, coordination or fine motor skills
  • Emotional or behavioral changes such as frustration, withdrawal or frequent meltdowns

In adults, signs can include difficulty with social communication, organization or adapting to change, as well as sensory sensitivities or challenges with daily routines.

Screening and diagnosis

At Banner Health, our specialists take time to understand each person’s needs through a combination of observation, conversation, and testing.

Diagnostic evaluations may include:

  • Developmental screenings at key ages during well-child visits
  • Autism-specific screenings (commonly at 18 and 24 months)
  • Cognitive, behavioral, and social assessments
  • Adaptive and academic testing
  • Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) or similar standardized evaluations

These assessments help our care team create a personalized plan that addresses developmental, behavioral and emotional needs.

Comprehensive treatment and support

Developmental conditions are lifelong, but with the right tools and therapies, individuals can continue to learn, grow and thrive. Our goal is to help each person reach their highest level of independence while supporting families every step of the way.

Therapies and services may include:

  • Occupational therapy: Builds fine motor, sensory, and self-care skills
  • Speech and language therapy: Improves communication and social interaction
  • Behavioral and cognitive therapies: Strengthen emotional regulation and problem-solving
  • Physical therapy: Helps improve strength, coordination, and balance
  • Social skills training and support groups: Foster connection and community

Treatment plans are customized to the individual and evolve as needs change.

Care for adults

Adults with autism or developmental disabilities can benefit from ongoing therapy and community-based programs that promote independence and emotional wellness. Our adult care options may include:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
  • Occupational and speech therapy
  • Counseling for anxiety, relationships and daily living skills
  • Support for career, social and communication goals

We collaborate closely with families and caregivers to ensure adults continue to receive meaningful support throughout life.
