What Should I Do for a Burn Victim?

Burn injuries can be life-threatening and require quick action. Whether it’s a minor burn or a more serious injury, knowing what to do can make a big difference. Follow these tips to stay safe and provide care until help arrives.

First steps for all burn injuries

If you’re helping someone with a burn, your first priority is safety - for both the victim and yourself.

Follow these steps:

  • Check the scene for safety. Don’t enter a dangerous area.
  • Stop the burning process. Remove the person from the heat source.
  • Call 911 if the burn is severe or covers a large area.
  • Provide CPR if the person is unresponsive and not breathing.
  • Remove jewelry, clothing or diapers near the burned area - but don’t remove anything stuck to the skin.
  • Cover the person with a clean, warm blanket to prevent heat loss and shock.

Types of burns

Burns can happen in many ways, and different types require different care.

Thermal burns

Caused by: flame, steam, hot liquids or hot surfaces.
These are the most common types of burns and can range from minor to severe.

Chemical burns

Caused by: contact with strong acids or bases (often in cleaning products).
Always rinse the affected area with water and remove contaminated clothing.

Inhalation burns

Caused by: breathing in superheated air, smoke or toxic gases.
These can damage the lungs and may not show visible signs. Watch for difficulty breathing.

Electrical burns

Caused by: faulty wiring, electrical outlets or lightning.
These burns may cause deep tissue damage - even if the skin looks fine. Victims should always be evaluated by a medical professional.

Frostbite (cold burns)

Caused by: freezing of tissues from prolonged cold exposure.
Frostbite damages the skin and underlying tissue and requires rewarming and medical care.

Important: Always seek medical attention for burns that are large, deep, involve the face or joints, or were caused by chemicals, electricity or smoke inhalation.
