Nutritional Counseling and Support at Home

Good nutrition is an important part of recovery and long-term wellness. Whether you’re living with a chronic condition or healing after an illness or surgery, the food you eat can have a powerful impact on your strength, energy and overall health.

At Banner Health, our skilled and friendly home care team includes registered dietitians who provide personalized in-home nutrition counseling. We work with you and your caregivers to create meal plans, improve eating habits and make food choices that support your specific health goals - all in the comfort of your home.

What is nutritional consulting?

After a diagnosis or major health change, you may need to adjust your diet to help manage your condition. The right nutrition plan can improve physical and mental health, reduce symptoms and even support treatment outcomes.

Our home-based nutritional counseling services combine education, practical support and one-on-one guidance to help patients and caregivers:

  • Eat balanced, nutritious meals
  • Manage symptoms and chronic diseases
  • Recover from illness or surgery
  • Reach and maintain a healthy weight
  • Improve strength, energy and overall well-being

Each nutrition plan is tailored to your health needs, preferences and lifestyle. Your Banner Health dietitian will help you make realistic, sustainable changes that fit into your daily life.

Our holistic approach to home nutrition care

At Banner Health, we take an integrated, whole-person approach to care. Nutritional counseling is often part of a larger home care plan that may also include nursing, physical therapy, medication management or social work support.

Your dietitian works closely with your doctor and home care team to ensure your nutrition plan supports your overall health and recovery. Learn more about Banner Home Care Services.

What to expect during your nutritional consultation

Your first visit begins with a comprehensive consultation so your dietitian can get to know you, your health and your goals. During this session, we’ll discuss:

  • Your medical history and current conditions
  • Lifestyle factors such as sleep, stress and physical activity
  • Food preferences and cooking habits
  • Any barriers to eating well, such as appetite changes, swallowing difficulties or medication side effects

Your dietitian will then assess your nutritional needs through a review of your:

  • Current diet and eating patterns
  • Weight, body mass index (BMI) and lab results (if available)
  • Daily calorie, protein and nutrient requirements
  • From there, we’ll develop a customized nutrition plan that may include:
  • Meal and snack ideas that match your dietary needs
  • Guidance on grocery shopping and meal preparation
  • Education on food labels, portion sizes and hydration
  • Practical strategies for managing appetite or taste changes

Ongoing counseling sessions may take place in person, by video visit or over the phone, depending on your care plan and preference.

Who can benefit from nutritional counseling?

Everyone can benefit from improving their nutrition, but for people with certain conditions, diet plays a major role in recovery and long-term health. Banner Health dietitians provide in-home support for patients managing:

  • Allergies and food intolerances
  • Cancer or treatment-related side effects
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Congestive heart failure

  • Kidney (renal) disease
  • Malnutrition or unintentional weight loss
  • Obesity or overweight
  • Poor weight gain or appetite loss

Your dietitian will help you find foods that nourish your body while supporting your treatment plan and improving your quality of life.

Getting started with home nutritional counseling

If you think you or a loved one could benefit from in-home nutrition support, talk to your doctor about a referral to a Banner Health registered dietitian. Your physician can help determine whether this service is covered by insurance or part of your existing home care plan.

Once your referral is received, a member of our home health team will contact you to schedule your first appointment. Together, we’ll help you create a plan that fits your needs and goals - one meal at a time.

Your partner in better health

At Banner Health, we believe nutrition is a key part of healing and wellness. Our home-based dietitians empower you and your caregivers with the tools and knowledge to make lasting changes that support your recovery and help you live your fullest life.
