Acupuncture

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is one of the most common treatments used in traditional Chinese medicine. It involves placing very thin, sterile needles into specific points on the body to help restore balance and support healing. These points are chosen to encourage the healthy flow of energy throughout the body and remove areas of blockage that may be linked to pain or illness.

How acupuncture works

Acupuncture stimulates the body’s natural healing response. When a needle is inserted into an acupuncture point, the body reacts by increasing blood flow and releasing chemicals such as endorphins, which help reduce pain and support relaxation. This can also influence nerve function and hormonal balance.

A guiding principle of Chinese medicine is:
Where there is flow, there is no pain. Where there is pain, there is no flow.

By improving flow and balance, acupuncture can help reduce symptoms and improve overall well-being.

Conditions that may benefit from acupuncture

Research shows that acupuncture can be effective as a stand-alone therapy or used alongside conventional medical care. It may help with symptoms related to:

  • Addiction support
  • Allergies and asthma
  • Digestive concerns such as IBS, nausea or gastritis
  • Anxiety, depression, stress or insomnia
  • Fatigue or chronic pain conditions like fibromyalgia
  • Gynecologic issues including menstrual pain and infertility
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Osteoarthritis and joint pain
  • Parkinson’s disease symptoms
  • Recovery from stroke

Acupuncture is generally safe when performed by trained providers and may be an option even when other treatments have not fully relieved symptoms.

What to expect during treatment

Most people feel minimal discomfort during acupuncture. The needles are much thinner than needles used for vaccines or blood draws. Many patients feel relaxed during the session and may even fall asleep.

Your provider will discuss:

  • How many sessions may be helpful
  • What you may feel during and after treatment
  • Whether acupuncture should be used along with other therapies

Always share your full medical history before treatment to make sure acupuncture is right for you.
