What to Expect

Getting ready for your first appointment with a pain management specialist? Use this guide to help you feel prepared and confident.

Before your appointment: What to bring

Make sure to gather and bring the following:

  • Your current medications (bottles or a list with dosages)
  • Contact information for your primary care doctor and any specialists
  • Pharmacy details
  • Relevant medical records, including surgeries, scans (MRIs, CTs, X-rays) or lab work

At your appointment: What to expect

Plan to arrive early to complete any paperwork. When meeting with your specialist:

  • Be open about your pain history and daily challenges
  • Bring a notebook or phone to jot down notes
  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions, such as:
    • What are realistic goals for treatment?
    • Which medications should I take or avoid?
    • How can I prevent pain flare-ups?

After your appointment: What to do next

Review your notes and any instructions you received. Still have questions? Call your provider’s office for clarification.

At follow-up visits, let your care team know how you’re doing. If your treatment isn’t working as expected, your plan may be adjusted.
