Pulmonary Wellness

Some Banner Health locations offer pulmonary wellness programs to support people living with breathing problems such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis. While these programs are designed for those with chronic lung conditions, many people can benefit from them.

What can pulmonary wellness do for me?

Pulmonary wellness programs combine exercises, activities, and education to help you improve your quality of life. Benefits may include:

  • Managing shortness of breath during everyday activities and exercise
  • Building strength, flexibility and endurance
  • Increasing your capacity and confidence to work, play and travel
  • Supporting healthy weight management
  • Reducing stress and improving relaxation
  • Getting better rest and sleep
  • Improving posture, balance and movement
  • Boosting independence and overall activity levels

Pulmonary wellness vs. pulmonary rehabilitation

Pulmonary wellness is not the same as pulmonary rehabilitation, though the two programs complement each other:

  • Pulmonary rehabilitation is a medically supervised program that may be covered by insurance.
  • Pulmonary wellness is a low-cost, community-based option designed to keep you active and motivated after rehab or on its own.

How to get started

Participation in pulmonary wellness requires a doctor’s referral. Talk to your doctor about whether this program is right for you and how it can support your long-term lung health.
