What to Expect

Preparing for your visit

Knowing what to expect before your appointment can help you feel more confident and get the most out of your time with your care team.

Before your appointment:

  • Make a checklist of everything you want to share with your provider, including:
    • All medications and supplements you currently take, with dosages
    • Any allergies, medical conditions or previous surgeries
    • A list of questions or concerns
    • Your pharmacy name and phone number
  • If possible, send your medical records or referral information to the office in advance.
  • Write down details about your injury, such as when it occurred, how it happened and any symptoms you’ve noticed since.

What to bring

On the day of your appointment, plan to arrive early—especially if this is your first visit. You may need time to fill out forms and provide insurance information. Bring:

  • Your photo ID, insurance card and co-pay
  • Any imaging results, records or referral notes related to your injury
  • A trusted friend or family member to help you take notes or provide support

During your appointment

Your provider will ask about your symptoms and how your injury occurred, then perform a thorough evaluation. This may include:

  • A physical and neurological exam
  • Balance and coordination testing
  • Memory and reaction assessments
  • A computerized neurocognitive test, such as ImPACT©, to measure brain function

Be sure to:

  • Ask questions if you don’t understand something
  • Clarify next steps, including any restrictions for work, school or sports
  • Confirm whether additional tests or imaging are needed

After your appointment

Once your evaluation is complete, your provider will review your results and discuss your personalized recovery plan.

After your visit:

  • Review your discharge instructions carefully
  • Fill any prescriptions and take medications as directed
  • Follow any return-to-activity guidance provided
  • Keep your provider’s phone number handy for questions or new symptoms
  • Schedule any recommended follow-up appointments or therapy sessions

If your symptoms change or worsen, contact your provider right away.
