Acne

Acne is one of the most common skin conditions - and one of the most frustrating. Whether you’re dealing with occasional breakouts or ongoing acne that affects your confidence and comfort, you don’t have to face it alone. The dermatology experts at Banner Health are here to help you understand your skin and find a treatment plan that works for you.

What is acne?

Acne is a skin condition that happens when your hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. It often causes pimples, blackheads, whiteheads and deeper bumps (nodules or cysts) on your face, chest, back and shoulders.

While acne is most common during adolescence, people of all ages - including adults - can get acne.

Types of acne

Not all acne looks or feels the same. Your dermatologist will identify the type of acne you have to guide treatment.

Common types include:

  • Whiteheads and blackheads (comedonal acne) – Mild and non-inflammatory
  • Papules and pustules – Red, swollen or pus-filled bumps
  • Nodules and cysts – Deep, painful lumps under the skin that can cause scarring
  • Hormonal acne – Flare-ups related to hormonal changes, often along the jawline or chin
  • Body acne – Breakouts on the chest, shoulders or back, often caused by sweat and friction

When to see a dermatologist for acne

If over-the-counter treatments aren’t working or your acne is affecting your self-esteem, it’s time to talk to a dermatologist. We recommend seeing a skin specialist if:

  • Your acne is painful, scarring or persistent
  • You’ve tried multiple products with little or no improvement
  • You experience breakouts beyond your teen years
  • You’re noticing dark spots or skin discoloration after pimples heal

How we treat acne

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution for acne. At Banner Health, we create personalized treatment plans based on your skin type, acne severity and lifestyle.

Your plan may include:

  • Topical treatments (creams, gels, lotions)
  • Prescription medications (oral antibiotics, hormonal therapies or retinoids)
  • In-office procedures (chemical peels, cortisone injections or light therapies)
  • Lifestyle and skincare guidance to help prevent new breakouts

Our dermatologists will work closely with you to find what works best and help you manage flare-ups over time.

Acne scars and discoloration

If you’ve had acne for a while, you may also have lingering marks. Our team can help improve the appearance of acne scars, dark spots or changes in skin texture with options like:

  • Laser treatments
  • Microneedling
  • Chemical peels
  • Prescription brightening agents
