Moles

Most people have moles—and in most cases, they’re completely harmless. But some moles can change over time or signal a risk of skin cancer. At Banner Health, our dermatology experts are here to evaluate, monitor and treat moles to keep your skin healthy and give you peace of mind.

What is a mole?

A mole (also called a nevus) is a common skin growth made up of pigment-producing cells called melanocytes. Moles can be flat or raised and may range in color from pink or tan to brown or black. They often appear in childhood or adolescence and may change slowly over time.

Some people are born with moles (congenital nevi), while others develop them later in life.

When to get a mole checked

Most moles are harmless. However, a mole should be evaluated by a dermatologist if it:

  • Changes in size, shape or color
  • Has irregular or uneven borders
  • Is asymmetrical (one half doesn’t match the other)
  • Appears suddenly or looks significantly different from other moles
  • Itches, bleeds or becomes painful

These may be signs of a dysplastic mole (an atypical mole) or melanoma, a serious type of skin cancer. Early detection is key.

Mole checks and skin exams

Our dermatologists perform thorough skin checks to evaluate moles and identify any changes or signs of concern. During your appointment, we may:

  • Examine all visible moles with a dermatoscope (a magnifying tool)
  • Measure and photograph moles to track changes over time
  • Recommend a biopsy if a mole looks unusual

We’ll also show you how to perform self-skin checks at home and give you guidance on sun protection to reduce your risk of skin cancer.

Mole removal

If a mole is bothersome, changing, or suspicious, we may recommend removal. Mole removal is a quick, in-office procedure that may involve:

  • Shave excision – The mole is shaved off the surface of the skin
  • Surgical excision – The mole is cut out along with a small margin of skin

Most mole removals are simple and done with local anesthesia. If a mole is removed for testing, we’ll send it to a lab to check for cancer or other concerns.

Cosmetic mole removal

Some patients choose to remove moles for cosmetic reasons. If a mole is in a visible area or affecting your self-confidence, we can help you decide on the best approach for safe removal and minimal scarring.
