Pediatrics Critical Care

Hearing that your child needs critical or intensive care can be overwhelming. At Banner Children’s, we understand the emotions that come with these moments - and we’re here for your family every step of the way. Our goal is to provide expert care for your child while offering support, guidance and comfort for you.

We offer pediatric intensive care and neonatal intensive care at several Banner Children’s locations. Whether your child is a newborn, infant or teen, our specially trained teams are equipped to care for critically ill or injured patients with compassion and advanced medical expertise.

What is neonatal intensive care?

Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) care for premature or critically ill newborns. These fragile patients often require specialized treatment, constant monitoring and advanced technology.

At Banner Children’s, we know welcoming a new baby is one of life’s most joyful milestones. If your baby needs to stay in the NICU, our team will provide highly personalized care while helping your family stay connected and supported throughout the experience.

Where are Banner Children's NICUs located?

You can find NICU services at the following locations:

Each NICU is equipped to handle the most serious newborn health conditions with advanced equipment and expert care teams.

How we care for premature and critically ill newborns

Every baby is different. Our NICU care teams create a customized plan based on your baby’s unique needs. For very premature babies, this includes developmental evaluations and care plans led by specialists trained in neonatal development.

You’ll also receive emotional and practical support. A developmental care specialist partners with your family to reduce stress and help you feel involved and informed throughout your baby’s hospital stay.

Who is on the NICU care team?

Your baby’s NICU care team may include:

  • Neonatologists
  • Neonatal nurse practitioners
  • NICU-trained nurses
  • Respiratory therapists
  • Case managers
  • Occupational and speech therapists
  • Pediatric nutrition experts
  • Lactation consultants
  • Pediatric subspecialists
  • Developmental care specialists

Our multidisciplinary team works closely together to deliver whole-person care for your baby and help your family transition to life at home. We also offer follow-up services like developmental clinics to support long-term growth and health.

What is pediatric intensive care?

Pediatric Intensive Care Units (PICUs) care for children of all ages - from infants to teens - who are experiencing serious illness or injury. These hospital units offer the same advanced equipment used in adult ICUs but are designed to be comforting and child-friendly.

At Banner Children’s, our family-centered approach ensures that both you and your child are cared for. We work to keep you informed and involved, and we create an environment that feels less like a hospital and more like a healing space.

Who is on the PICU care team?

In the PICU, your child will be cared for by a team of professionals that includes:

  • Pediatric critical care doctors (intensivists)
  • Pediatric nurses
  • Respiratory therapists
  • Registered dietitians
  • Pediatric specialists
