Is It Time to See a Sleep Specialist?

If you’re having trouble falling asleep, staying asleep or waking up tired, it may be more than just a few restless nights. Use this quick self-check to find out if it’s time to talk with a sleep specialist at Banner Health.

Our sleep experts can help identify what’s keeping you from getting the rest you need - whether it’s sleep apnea, insomnia, restless legs syndrome or another sleep disorder.

Sleep assessment questions

Answer “yes” or “no” to the questions below. If you answer “yes” to one or more, it may be a sign of an underlying sleep disorder that should be evaluated by a doctor.

  • Do you often feel tired or sleepy during the day?
  • Do you wake up with headaches or have trouble concentrating?
  • Do you struggle to fall asleep or stay asleep through the night?
  • Has anyone told you that you snore loudly or stop breathing while you sleep?
  • Do you ever fall asleep unintentionally during the day or while driving?
  • Do you feel a tingling, crawling or “creepy” sensation in your legs or arms when resting?

When to seek care for sleep concerns

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, talk to your primary care provider or request an appointment with a Banner Health sleep specialist. These symptoms may point to a condition that can be diagnosed and treated, such as:

  • Sleep apnea
  • Insomnia
  • Restless legs syndrome
  • Narcolepsy
  • Circadian rhythm disorders

Early evaluation and treatment can improve your energy, focus and overall health.

What happens next

Your provider may recommend a sleep study, also called polysomnography, to better understand your sleep patterns. During this test, your breathing, oxygen levels, brain waves and movements are monitored overnight.

From there, our team can determine what’s causing your sleep problems and create a personalized treatment plan to help you sleep better and feel more alert during the day.
