Alzheimer’s Disease Signs and Symptoms

Back To Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia

Memory problems are often one of the first signs of Alzheimer’s disease, but not every memory lapse means Alzheimer’s. Forgetfulness can be a normal part of aging, or it may be linked to other health conditions. The signs, symptoms and severity of Alzheimer’s vary from person to person.

At Banner Health, our dementia specialists at the Banner Alzheimer’s Institute and Banner Sun Health Research Institute - both designated Centers of Excellence by the National Institutes of Health - are leading research to improve early detection and diagnosis. An early diagnosis can give patients and families access to more treatment options, resources and support to help preserve cognitive function and quality of life.

What is considered normal aging?

As we get older, our brains naturally change, just as our bodies do. Some mild changes in thinking and memory are expected and do not necessarily point to Alzheimer’s disease. Normal age-related changes may include:

  • Processing information more slowly
  • Needing more focus to pay attention
  • Forgetting names, dates, or where items are placed
  • Having more difficulty multitasking
  • Occasionally struggling to find the right word
  • Needing reminders to recall details or conversations

These changes are usually manageable and do not interfere with daily life.

10 warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease

Unlike normal aging, Alzheimer’s disease involves brain changes that begin years before symptoms appear. Recognizing the early signs is important so you or your loved one can get the right care. Talk with a doctor if you notice one or more of the following warning signs:

  1. Memory loss – Forgetting recently learned information, conversations or events
  2. Difficulty with routine tasks – Trouble managing medications, paying bills or handling chores
  3. Language and speaking problems – Struggling to find words, substitute unusual words or follow conversations
  4. Confusion with time or place – Getting lost in familiar locations or forgetting the date or season
  5. Poor judgment – Making decisions that are out of character, such as giving away large sums of money
  6. Problems with abstract thinking – Difficulty with planning, organizing or using familiar objects correctly
  7. Misplacing items – Putting belongings in unusual places, such as keys in the freezer
  8. Mood or behavior changes – Becoming anxious, irritable, depressed or easily upset
  9. Personality changes – Growing fearful, suspicious, dependent or withdrawn
  10. Loss of initiative or interest – Sleeping more, watching TV all day or losing interest in favorite activities
