Happy and healthy at every life stage

Aging is a natural part of life, and how you care for yourself today can impact how you feel tomorrow. By maintaining a healthy lifestyle, you can improve your physical and mental well-being, adapt to changes, and continue doing the things you love. At Banner Health, we’re here to support you at every stage of life with expert care and helpful resources.

Staying active as you age

Regular movement helps you stay strong, independent and positive as you grow older. Whether it’s walking, stretching, swimming or strength training, physical activity supports balance, bone health, and overall quality of life.

Mental health and aging

Life changes - such as retirement, loss or health conditions - can affect your mood, energy and motivation. Even if you haven’t faced mental health concerns before, aging may bring new challenges.

Find tips and resources for mental health support.

Engaging your brain

Brain health is one of the top concerns for older adults. Taking a proactive approach—through activities like puzzles, reading, socializing and lifelong learning—can help keep your memory sharp and your mind active.

More ways to manage your health

Prioritize sleep

Adults over 65 still need 7–8 hours of sleep each night. If you wake often, feel tired during the day or suspect sleep apnea, our sleep specialists can help you get the rest you need.

Prevent falls

Falls are a leading cause of injury for older adults. Protect yourself by:

  • Removing cords and clutter from walkways
  • Using non-slip mats in the bathroom
  • Adding nightlights for visibility
  • Storing everyday items on easy-to-reach shelves
  • Securing rugs and repairing loose steps or handrails

Go tobacco-free

It’s never too late to quit smoking. Stopping tobacco use lowers your risk of lung cancer and improves heart and lung health. Banner Health offers tools, medications and coaching to support your journey.

Moderate alcohol use

Older adults should limit alcohol to fewer than 7 drinks per week if otherwise healthy and not taking medications. Always check with your doctor to understand what’s safe for you. If you’re concerned about alcohol use, Banner Health offers treatment programs and support

Practice safe sex

Sexually transmitted infections are rising among older adults. Protect yourself by using condoms until both partners have been tested and are in a monogamous relationship. Open communication is key to maintaining a healthy sex life.

Other common senior health concerns

Aging may also bring new questions about hearing, vision, heart health, bone strength and more. At Banner Health, we provide compassionate, individualized care to help you manage these concerns and live well.
