Preventive Care for Older Adults

As you and your loved ones get older, staying healthy and active often means scheduling more regular visits with your health care providers. This is a natural part of aging - and it’s also an opportunity. Preventive care becomes even more important during this stage of life, helping you stay ahead of health issues before they become bigger concerns.

At Banner Health, we’re here to support your health with both in-person and online care options. Whether you’re managing a chronic condition or simply want to stay well, we’re committed to helping you thrive at every age.

What is preventive care?

Preventive care is medical care that helps catch or avoid health problems before they start - or before they become serious. It includes:

  • Annual checkups with your primary care provider
  • Health screenings (like blood pressure, cholesterol and cancer screenings)
  • Routine lab tests
  • Vaccinations
  • Counseling on nutrition, physical activity and mental well-being

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle—such as eating nutritious foods, staying active, and avoiding smoking or excessive alcohol use—is also a form of preventive care.

Important health screenings and exams

Regular checkups and screenings can help detect health problems early, when they’re often easier to treat. Depending on your age, sex and health history, your doctor may recommend:

  • Blood pressure and cholesterol checks – Typically every 1–2 years
  • Colorectal cancer screening – Starting at age 45
  • Mammograms – Starting at age 40 or based on personal risk
  • Bone density tests – Usually recommended for women starting at age 65, or earlier if at risk
  • Vision and hearing exams – At least every 1–2 years
  • Type 2 diabetes screening – Starting at age 35 or sooner if you have risk factors
  • Vaccinations – Including flu, shingles, pneumonia, COVID-19 and others

Talk with your doctor about what screenings and vaccines are right for you.

Build healthy habits for a better life

Your body changes as you age, but healthy habits can help you feel your best—physically, mentally and emotionally. Here are a few simple ways to support healthy aging

  • Stay physically active with regular movement, such as walking, swimming or stretching
  • Eat a well-balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins
  • Get enough sleep (7–8 hours a night is ideal for most adults)
  • Stay socially connected to friends, family and community
  • Find ways to reduce stress and protect your mental health
  • Avoid tobacco and limit alcohol

If you're managing multiple medications, ask your doctor or pharmacist about a medication review to avoid harmful interactions.
