The heart transplant process starts with making sure you meet the qualifications. If you do, you need to be prepared since a donor heart may be available at any time. After your surgery, you will probably stay in the hospital for two to four weeks and then see your provider for biopsies through the first six months. Many people are able to get back to work, exercise, hobbies and everyday life.
You may need an LVAD if you’re waiting for a heart transplant or if you aren’t able to have a heart transplant. Your care team can help you understand whether you need an LVAD based on your heart failure and other health conditions, your support network and how well you’re expected to do with the device.
