Sleep Medicine FAQ

We’re here to help with your sleep questions

If you’re experiencing sleep problems, you’re not alone. Sleep disorders can affect your daily life, but getting answers and support starts with knowing what to expect. Below are answers to frequently asked questions about sleep studies and sleep medicine at Banner Health.

Common questions about sleep studies and sleep medicine

What should I bring to my sleep study?

For an inpatient sleep study at a Banner Health sleep center, pack like you would for an overnight stay. Bring:

  • Comfortable sleepwear
  • Any medications you regularly take
  • Toiletries
  • A favorite pillow or blanket, if that helps you relax

Our goal is to make you feel as comfortable as possible.

Can I bring a family member to my sleep study?

A family member can drop you off and pick you up. However, because this is a study of your sleep, only you can stay overnight.

For children: We have special pediatric sleep rooms that allow a parent or guardian to stay overnight with their child.

How long does a sleep study take?

Most sleep studies last between six to eight hours, depending on your normal sleep patterns. This allows our sleep specialists to monitor your entire sleep cycle.

What equipment is used during a sleep study?

For an in-lab sleep study, you’ll be connected to monitors that check your:

  • Brain activity
  • Eye movements
  • Breathing
  • Muscle and body movements

We make every effort to keep you comfortable and undisturbed throughout the night.

For an at-home sleep study, we’ll send you home with a small, easy-to-use device that includes a finger sensor. It’s designed to be worn comfortably while you sleep.

What if I can’t fall asleep during the test?

It’s normal to feel a little uneasy before the study, especially with unfamiliar equipment. Try to follow your usual nighttime routine.

If falling asleep becomes a problem, our sleep team will work with you and your doctor on next steps or other testing options.

What does healthy sleep look like?

Most adults need 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night, but some people may need a little more or less. Signs of healthy sleep include:

  • Feeling refreshed in the morning
  • Staying alert throughout the day
  • Not needing frequent naps

Can I have caffeine, alcohol or melatonin before my sleep study?

Always talk with your doctor before your sleep test. Ask about:

  • Which medications to take or avoid
  • Whether to skip caffeine, wine or sleep aids like melatonin

If these are part of your routine, let your doctor know during your consultation.

How do I know if I have a sleep disorder?

Some signs of a possible sleep disorder include:

  • Trouble falling or staying asleep
  • Loud snoring or gasping during sleep
  • Feeling tired all day, even after a full night’s rest

Try our online sleep questionnaire to see if it’s time to talk to your doctor.
